A Staircase Built For A Barn Conversion

March 11, 2026

A Traditional Oak Staircase for a Rustic Barn

A Project By: BB Exclusive Fabs

Location: Bradshaw, Bolton – Greater Manchester, UK

Project Summary:

This recently completed staircase installation in Bradshaw forms the centrepiece of a beautifully restored barn conversion, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary detailing.

Project Details:

Designed to complement the character of the property, this staircase features solid oak closed stringers, creating a timeless and substantial framework that suits the rustic architecture of the barn. The warmth of the oak pairs naturally with the exposed structural beams, preserving the authenticity of the building while elevating the overall finish.

The treads were prepared for carpeting to add comfort underfoot and soften the overall aesthetic, while bespoke CNC-cut solid steel spindles, finished in a refined black powder coat, introduce a subtle modern contrast. The precision-cut detailing of the spindles adds a distinctive architectural edge without overpowering the traditional form.

Overcoming the Space Challenge

One of the key challenges of this project was designing a staircase that would feel open and fluid within a relatively tight footprint. Careful planning, proportioning and layout adjustments ensured the staircase flows naturally through the space while maintaining a sense of openness.

By balancing solid oak elements with the visual lightness of the steel balustrade, the final design avoids feeling heavy — instead enhancing the spaciousness of the interior.

A Statement Feature

The finished staircase sits perfectly beneath a striking hanging centrepiece light, with the vertical lines of the balustrade drawing the eye upward toward the exposed beams above. The combination of traditional oak, crisp black steel and architectural lighting creates a cohesive, high-end finish that feels both timeless and contemporary.

This project reflects our commitment to delivering bespoke staircases that are not only structurally precise but also thoughtfully designed to complement the character and flow of each individual property.
