This project began with a simple but ambitious brief: to turn the uppermost part of the house into a self-contained retreat that could adapt over time. The clients wanted a space that could workimmediately as a guest room or home office, while also functioning as a future bedroom with a fully integrated bathroom. The challenge was not the ambition of the brief, but the limits of the space itself. Tight eaves, sloped ceilings, restricted access, and the need for full functionality meant that every decision had to work hard. Elemented’s response was to treat the project as an exercise in spatial discipline, using light, symmetry, and bespoke detailing to make the footprint feel calm rather than constrained.
The design approach was shaped by the roofline rather than forced against it. Instead of treating the pitch and awkward geometry as problems to hide, the project worked with them directly. Custom full-height wardrobes were designed to sit cleanly within the sloped envelope, bringing order, storage, and symmetry to the bedroom zone. This was not simply a matter of fitting joinery into difficult corners. It was about using joinery to stabilise the architecture of the room and make the whole space feel more intentional. The result is compact, but never compromised.
A key part of the project’s success lies in how light was handled. A slim skylight above the stairwell helps draw daylight into the approach, while vertical roof glazing and carefully placed lighting details make the loft feel brighter and more open than its footprint would suggest. The ensuite sits behind a sheet of frosted glass, creating privacy without shutting down the flow of light across the plan. That single move allows the space to remain visually open while still functioning as a proper upper-level suite. It is a small project, but one built on highly disciplined spatial choices.
Materially, the loft is warm, restrained, and tactile. Natural oak flooring runs throughout, softening the sharper lines of the roof geometry and helping unify the whole level. Bespoke oak wardrobes, brushed brass fixtures, exposed brick, and soft bathroom tiling add richness without visual noise. In the ensuite, warm wall lights and a walk-in shower give the bathroom a quiet sense of luxury, while the bedroom remains peaceful and almost hidden from the bustle below. The palette is deliberately simple, but carefully judged. It gives the loft its own identity while keeping the overall effect clean, modern, and calm.
