Islington Garden Room
This garden room in Islington was designed as an artist’s studio and guest suite, featuring concertina doors that open fully onto the garden.
Built under permitted development rights, it is a self-contained space that includes a shower room.
Completed just before the COVID pandemic, the room’s flexibility enabled the client to operate their legal practice from this space throughout the lockdown period.
The design is low maintenance, featuring Accoya “Shou Sugi Ban” cladding, an ancient Japanese technique of preserving and charring timber to naturally enhance resistance to rot, fire, and insects without chemicals.
A sedum roof was also incorporated, which not only allows the garden room to blend seamlessly with the surrounding foliage but also keeps the space naturally cool and promotes biodiversity.
