Ladybird Farm: A Stunning Award-Winning Eco Home

Ladybird Farm represents an exceptional achievement in sustainable architecture, harmonising traditional aesthetics with contemporary innovation. This replacement dwelling exemplifies thoughtful design that respects its historical setting while addressing the demands of modern living. By integrating sustainability, innovative construction methods, and architectural sensitivity, Ladybird Farm offers a compelling vision for the future of vernacular architecture.

The design brief for Ladybird Farm called for a transformation: replacing a deteriorated, unsympathetic structure with a home that both honoured the site’s historical character and embraced sustainable modernity. The new dwelling retains a traditional Cornish vernacular aesthetic with its slate roof, lime-rendered walls, and untreated timber cladding. These materials, sourced locally, seamlessly connect the building to its rural surroundings while ensuring durability and minimal maintenance.

The house’s relationship with the adjacent Grade II-listed Tamsquite House and the curtilage-listed walled garden was carefully considered. By removing outdated blockwork outbuildings, the design enhances the visual prominence of the historical structures. The reduced number of south-facing openings ensures privacy while framing picturesque views of the walled garden and the surrounding landscape. The copper-clad walkway connecting the home to the garden introduces a subtle modern element that complements the timeless charm of the site.

Ladybird Farm embraces an open-plan concept, particularly evident on the first floor, where scissor trusses create an expansive, airy space. Gable glazing allows natural light to flood the interior, providing breathtaking views of the nearby valley. Thoughtful solar control features, such as louvers and solar-control glass, mitigate heat gain during summer, ensuring year-round comfort.

Ladybird Farm’s construction prioritises sustainability at every level. The use of the innovative Cornish R-Wall system provides exceptional U-values, airtightness, and thermal mass, minimising energy consumption. Ladybird Farm was the worthy winner of the 2024 Built It Awards – winner of the Best ICF Home (Insulating Concrete Form). The house’s operational carbon footprint of 15 kWh/m²/year is a fraction of the national average, reflecting its exceptional energy efficiency. Its embodied carbon is equally impressive at 361 kgCO₂/m², meeting RIBA’s 2025 sustainability targets.

Locally manufactured concrete, secondary aggregates, and engineered timber joists reduce material waste and embodied carbon. The house’s thermal mass regulates indoor temperatures, ensuring a comfortable living environment with minimal energy input. Additionally, its thoughtful construction method and materials extend the building’s lifespan well beyond the typical 60 years, further enhancing its sustainability credentials.

Ladybird Farm also prioritises ecological stewardship. By working with ecologists to safely strip the old structure, the project preserved local bat populations and enhanced biodiversity through integral bat boxes, a dedicated loft space for long-eared bats, sparrow terraces, and bee blocks. These measures underline the architects’ commitment to respecting and enriching the local ecosystem.

Ladybird Farm is more than a building; it is a vision realised. By blending traditional forms with cutting-edge sustainability and contemporary design, this project offers a blueprint for creating homes that are both functional and inspiring. It respects its heritage, integrates seamlessly into its landscape and demonstrates an unwavering commitment to reducing environmental impact. Ladybird Farm is a testament to what is possible when innovation meets reverence for history.
