An Introduction to Colledge Architects
Colledge Architects is a small architectural practice based in the Cotswolds village of Shipton-under -Wychwood. The practice specialises in residential architecture and the adaptation and conservation of historic buildings. The practice also enjoys producing considered contemporary designs within historic settings.
Inspired by the local vernacular of the Cotswolds, traditional materials and the surrounding landscape, our work aims to create responsive, sustainable architecture which sits comfortably within its context and is a joy to inhabit.
We work closely with clients to ensure each project reflects their vision, while drawing on the expertise of our trusted consultant network to deliver well-rounded, coordinated solutions.
Director Matthew Colledge remains personally involved in every project, blending thoughtful design with a deep respect for heritage. As a RIBA Conservation Architect, Matthew is formally accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects for his specialist expertise in the care, repair, and adaptation of historic buildings.

The Team
Matthew Colledge – Director
Matthew founded Colledge Architects in 2023, following 20 years of experience across a range of sectors and project scales. Graduating from The Manchester School of Architecture with a first-class honours he became a registered architect in 2009 and joined the RIBA Conservation Register as an Accredited Conservation Architect in 2025.
After working in established practices in Manchester and London, including as an Associate at Squire and Partners, Matthew relocated to the Cotswolds in 2017. Here he established a Cotswolds studio for Woldon Architects in Chipping Campden and worked with historic estates and private residences, delivering sensitive conversions of listed buildings and bespoke, high-end, low-energy homes in a contemporary vernacular.
Matthew’s portfolio includes work on listed barns, stables, walled gardens and manor houses. He is experienced in securing statutory consents for sensitive sites and liaising with Historic England and local conservation officers. Experience also includes working on large scale residential and commercial projects across London, including The Frames for Workspace Group in Shoreditch, which was shortlisted for a BCO award in 2019.
Matthew has a deep understanding of traditional construction methods and a passion for technical detailing and craftsmanship. He enjoys spending his spare time with his family and running and cycling.

These experiential qualities can be created in a new building through well considered holistic design, although the patina of history which lives within the walls of older buildings drives me to bring these buildings back to life without erasing their stories.“
