LDS Appointed for the Sensitive Redevelopment of Harpenden Public Halls

By: Lead Design Studios

LDS is delighted to announce its appointment as Architectural Lead for RIBA Stages 4 and 5 and Principal Designer under the Building Regulations for the much-anticipated conversion of the Harpenden Public Halls. Commissioned by Christchurch Harpenden, the practice has already commenced work on the detailed design and technical drawing packages in preparation for building control submission and tender.

Reimagining a Local Landmark

The Harpenden Public Halls have long held a special place in the town’s collective memory, serving as a vibrant venue for community gatherings and events over many decades. The forthcoming redevelopment marks an important chapter in the life of this beloved civic building, transforming it into a contemporary and versatile community hub that will continue to support local life for generations to come.

The project involves the sensitive conversion, refurbishment, and extension of the existing structure to provide new facilities for Christchurch Harpenden. The architectural strategy centres on respecting the integrity of the original building while introducing thoughtful interventions to enhance functionality, accessibility, and aesthetic quality.

Design Approach

Working largely within the existing structure, LDS has developed a design approach that seeks to maximise spatial and visual impact with minimal structural intervention. The scheme aspires to create a welcoming, adaptable, and cohesive environment that reflects the spirit of inclusivity and community central to Christchurch Harpenden’s mission.

Key elements of the design include:

  • Comprehensive building refurbishment and conversion
  • Installation of a new mezzanine level within the main hall
  • First-floor side and rear extensions
  • Creation of new staff offices
  • Conversion of the basement into a dedicated Sunday school facility

Collaboration and Next Steps

LDS is collaborating with a talented team of consultants to deliver the project, combining architectural sensitivity with technical rigour to achieve a design that balances heritage and modernity.

Further updates on the project’s progress will be shared as work advances. For more information, visit Lead Design Studio’s website Public Halls, Harpenden – Lead Design Studios
