Humble Cottage: A Contemporary Extension to a Traditional Cornish Cottage

A Project By: Laurence Associates

Nestled within the hamlet of Ellenglaze, near Cubert, Humble Cottage is a carefully considered residential extension that sensitively balances contemporary design with the character of a traditional Cornish dwelling. The existing two storey cottage, believed to date from the early nineteenth century, sits adjacent to the domestic curtilage of Ellenglaze Manor, a Grade II Listed building, within a setting rich in local heritage and architectural significance.

Commissioned to provide additional living accommodation and a new master bedroom suite, Laurence Associates designed a modest contemporary extension to the southeastern elevation of the property. The scheme was developed to enhance the functionality of the home while maintaining a respectful relationship with the existing cottage and its surrounding context. The extension also creates direct access to the elevated garden, strengthening the connection between the internal living spaces and the landscape beyond.

Constructed using a carefully selected palette of locally appropriate materials, including natural stonework, slate roofing, zinc detailing, timber doors and powder coated aluminium windows, the design complements the traditional fabric of the original cottage while expressing a distinctly contemporary architectural language. The light filled extension deliberately contrasts with the historic structure, creating a clear distinction between old and new. Internally, the exposed natural stone gable of the original cottage remains a focal feature within the dining space, reinforcing the building’s history and sense of place.

Beneath the master bedroom suite, a lower ground floor level provides practical utility and storage accommodation, while establishing a direct link to the stepped rear terrace. The result is a cohesive and highly functional addition that enhances the home’s spatial quality without compromising its historic character.

Laurence Associates were appointed to deliver the project through RIBA Work Stages 1 to 7, providing a comprehensive architectural service from initial concept through to completion. Finished in Summer 2021, Humble Cottage exemplifies the practice’s approach to thoughtful, context responsive design, combining contemporary living requirements with craftsmanship, material integrity and a deep respect for Cornwall’s built heritage.
