This £3.5m restoration- supported by Barnsley Council, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), Levelling Up funding, and £1.6m from Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ), launched last year and now offers a revitalised space designed that integrates  historical character with modern functionality. A Heritage-Driven Vision Contextual analysis & community engagement – The HLM Culture team conducted in-depth research into the town-centre’s evolving development, working collaboratively with Barnsley Civic Enterprise, stakeholders, and the local community. Together they shaped a design that honours the building’s past while exploiting its potential as a community asset. Victorian entrance reinstated – HLM Architects painstakingly restored the original Eldon Street façade uncovering its elaborate mosaics, grand canopy, and vaulted ceiling for the first time since its closure in 1998.
