The Hampton Gardens Secondary School By: Frank Shaw Associates The Hampton Gardens Secondary School is a 1,500-place new-build School designed and delivered by Frank Shaw within Peterborough’s new Hampton Gardens development. A joint project between Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, Hampton Gardens opened in September 2017 and has been run by Hampton Academies Trust – who also run the nearby Hampton College. In response to the unique context and sponsor’s pedagogy, our design was conceived as two curriculum wings – one housing a STEM centre and the other accommodating humanities, which embraces a sheltered, south facing, recreation space. The main entrance is crowned by the Learning Resource Centre and is approached via a wide pedestrian boulevard punctuated by meeting and seating areas overlooking the 3G all-weather sports pitch. The site includes an external dining terrace, a tiered amphitheatre providing shelter and performance space, and a multi-use games areas. The school also has provision for 300 sixth form students. During the construction process, we worked as the delivery architect, becoming the City Council’s preferred team alongside the main contractor following a rigorous competitive process.
