Stations of Return: Visualising the Civic in 7N’s HUB Station Design By: Wyrd Tree When Edinburgh-based 7N Architects won Network Rail’s Reimagining Railway Stations competition in 2021, the proposal marked a shift—not just in typology, but in attitude. Designed as modular, adaptable civic infrastructure for small and medium stations across the UK, the HUB Station would become not only a place of passage, but one of return: to landscape, locality, and collective ritual. WyrdTree had the chance to contribute early to this conversation, creating a pair of key visuals that supported 7N’s competition-winning concept. These were not promotional images in the glossy sense; they were invitations—sketches of civic plausibility. One looked out from the railway platform under a photovoltaic canopy; the other hovered above the station’s open spatial structure, capturing the logic of the “kit of parts” without reducing it to prefab monotony. We approached these images with a question: what does arrival feel like when it’s shaped by thoughtful calibration ? Not grandeur, not drama—just proportion, clarity, shelter.
