Whetstone, Barnet By: T2S Architecture Our brief was to create an apartment building within this constrained site in suburban North London. The design needed to appear as a singular detached dwelling, the in keeping with the local urban grain, whilst accommodating numerous residential units in keeping with the client’s brief. T2S completed in depth site analysis in order to understand the site constraints and he Architectural language. We discovered that this area is typical of the outer London character, where large, detached buildings, which are invariably residential, are dotted in a suburban typology. It is common for these buildings to feature a slightly diluted version of the Arts and Crafts style, where strong gabled frontages are emphasised using timber or brickwork detailing. This analysis of the urban grain, and Architectural style, formed the basis the design strategy. At the front, a strong gable frontage is created, emphasised using a deep set back, forming a lightwell allowing daylight into the lower ground. Brickwork detailing is used as an elegant way to evoke the arts and crafts style used in the area. The design becomes more sculptured to the rear, in direct response to the surrounding buildings.
