MELLALUE: A Sustainable Coastal Home in Harmony with Nature
MELLALUE is a contemporary, low-energy home that replaces a dated mid-20th century dormer bungalow in Polzeath. Designed to embrace the stunning coastal landscape, the project was driven by a strong sustainability ethos and a desire to improve both the homeowners’ experience and their neighbours’ outlook.
The client’s brief called for a modern, energy-efficient home that could accommodate a multigenerational family. A central design challenge was to protect sea views for neighbours while minimising the building’s visual impact. The solution: a curved, green roof that mirrors the natural landscape and keeps the ridge height in line with the original bungalow.
Internally, a distinctive “spline wall” runs the length of the house, dividing public and private spaces while drawing visitors toward panoramic sea views revealed upon entry.
The home is arranged across three levels:
- Lower Ground: Subterranean bedrooms and a teen lounge with sea views.
- Ground Floor: Open-plan living, guest bedroom for elderly parents, utility, and services.
- First Floor: Master suite and additional en-suite bedroom, both with terraces.
Construction & Sustainability
Built by Ecofab (the architects’ sister company), Mellalue uses a super-insulated 300mm timber frame filled with reclaimed sheep wool. The structure prioritises low embodied carbon, airtightness (1.91 m³/h·m² @ 50pa), and breathable wall construction. Materials include FSC-certified timber, Bitroc sheathing, and low-impact insulation like Jablite and Rockwool.
Energy systems feature MVHR ventilation, underfloor heating powered by an efficient LPG boiler and a high-performance wood stove. LED lighting and natural finishes reduce energy demand and promote indoor health.
The design enhances biodiversity with sedum roofs, wildlife-friendly planting and new Cornish hedging. Construction carefully protected local badger habitats, while gardens now attract bees, birds and insects.
The site operates off-grid with a septic tank and soakaway for wastewater. Water butts collect rainwater for irrigation. Building off-cuts were reused or repurposed, minimising landfill waste and promoting circular material use.
Low-maintenance materials like pressure-treated timber, copper rainwater goods and self-cleaning windows were chosen for longevity in the coastal environment. Safe roof access allows for green roof maintenance
Mellalue sets a high bar for sustainable design in Cornwall. Its careful blend of innovative architecture, thoughtful detailing, and environmental responsibility has earned local admiration and winning industry awards. It stands as a benchmark for future homes in sensitive landscapes.
