An educational environment stretching beyond the classroom – River Grove Elementary School

Arcadis, a leading global company delivering sustainable architecture, engineering and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets, has designed and delivered River Grove Elementary School, a fully electric, certified path-to-net-zero school building in Lake Oswego, Oregon.
River Grove Elementary School is a thoughtful, environmentally progressive replacement of the original site, built in 1967. Located just outside of Portland, the school is designed to provide a flexible and varied learning environment for each of its 390 students and address the challenges of a fragmented school community caused by the previous layout and the impact of a global pandemic.
Student input was central to shaping Arcadis’ vision and planning principles. Students at River Grove shared how their school environment could better support their learning, wellbeing and interactions with the natural world, which became key elements of the building’s design. Additional input from community gatherings, listening sessions, workshops, tours and surveys helped maintain momentum and community support, with publicly available documentation ensuring accountability along the way.
Originally a series of separate buildings connected by covered walkways, Arcadis saw the future of River Grove as extending beyond the classroom, fostering a greater connection to the environment and designed with community at its heart. To achieve this, architects set out flexible event spaces, a central entrance with views of the learning courtyard, commons, an outdoor garden, innovation lab and library.
All of the redesigned school’s classrooms were grouped into ‘learning neighbourhoods’ around a shared extended learning area, connected through the courtyard and central hub of the innovation lab and library. This innovative, inclusive approach is built around the principle that individuals learn and thrive in different environments and is designed for every learner. Reflecting student input, daylight, views to nature and outdoor learning zones increase connections to the natural world and River Grove’s stunning natural surroundings.
Augmenting this cohesive and connected built environment, Arcadis collaborated with the school district and a local utility company to develop a microgrid design, making River Grove one of the first American schools to feature this innovation and a key contributor towards Oregon’s efforts to reach zero carbon energy production by 2040.
This climate-conscious approach is in fitting with a wider move away from traditional passive design strategies in the Pacific Northwest, and with hotter summers and smoke-filled air becoming the new normal, it was time for a change. The aim was for the new school to be an effective learning environment that was both resilient and carbon neutral.
The new River Grove Elementary School is built to Seismic Level IV standards to safeguard against both natural disasters and extreme weather conditions. It can serve as a community resource during earthquakes or prolonged power outages, supporting the neighbourhood when the utility grid fails.
The building’s design also prioritises ventilation and fresh air, responding to challenges posed by wildfires and the Covid-19 pandemic, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to resilience and sustainability in the face of increasing regional challenges. It’s a groundbreaking example of innovation and impact that addresses climate challenges while fostering community connection and enhancing student wellbeing.
Arcadis’ design for River Grove reflects the voices of its students and community, creating a school environment that fosters wellbeing, learning and a deeper connection to nature. Environmentally, the building has already demonstrated a 35% reduction in energy use compared to the baseline (saving $27,000 a year), rising to 70% when compared to similar schools in the region. Equally as importantly, it has transformed students’ educational experience, looking beyond the classroom to innovate and inspire.
