The Tees Transporter Bridge
Spanning the River Tees between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence, the Tees Transporter Bridge stands as one of the most recognisable symbols of the North East’s industrial heritage. Opened in 1911, the bridge is a feat of early 20th-century engineering and one of only a handful of working transporter bridges left in the world. A visionary scheme led by Kevin Brown and Luca Biselli, working in collaboration with Arup, sought to restore the bridge’s functionality while making it more accessible and engaging for modern visitors. Their project included the design and installation of a new gondola, replacing the ageing original, and the introduction of a state-of-the-art lift to the upper walkway. This lift provided access for all, allowing people of all abilities to experience the breathtaking views from the top—something previously limited to those able to climb its many steps.

Yet, despite these ambitious efforts, the Tees Transporter Bridge now faces a difficult future. Time and weather have taken their toll, and the structure is once again showing signs of serious decay. Maintenance costs are high, and without substantial investment, this proud symbol of Middlesbrough’s industrial might risks falling into disrepair.
