Education Masterplanning
Wotton Donoghue Architects (WDA) has a strong track record in developing campus masterplans for several large independent schools and colleges. We have created a Masterplan Toolkit that enables us to comprehensively assess each client’s estate. The toolkit incorporates relevant design guidance, spatial analysis, and coordinated stakeholder engagement and brief development to inform strategic design options. The resulting masterplan is an evolving document that establishes a strategic framework for future development — whether through refurbishment, reconfiguration, or new-build capital works.
WDA has been working with Taunton School since 2017, beginning with their campus masterplan and subsequently leading the design and delivery of several development phases. Masterplan of which was submitted for planning alongside key project works. Completed projects include a new dining hall, FIH-standard hockey pitches, and, more recently, a new boarding house. We continue to support the school in delivering its long-term vision through ongoing development and strategic input.
In 2024, we were commissioned by Wells Cathedral School to refurbish its arts department. Following the success of this project, WDA was engaged by the school to prepare a campus masterplan, completed in summer 2024, which identified further feasibility projects now underway.
In 2025, we were appointed by the Royal National College for the Blind to prepare a masterplan for the college and associated sports facilities, with our recommendations presented to the Governors that autumn.
At Bishop’s Stortford College, WDA is leading the design and delivery of a new sixth form centre, providing architectural leadership as well as interiors/FF&E and Building Regulations Principal Designer roles. Other notable clients include Queen’s College Taunton, Bristol Grammar School, and Millfield School. We are also part of the Future for Somerset Consultant Framework, supporting state school improvement projects across the region.
