Transforming History into a Modern Learning Environment: Sacks Morasha Primary School in Finchley By: Square Feet Architects Square Feet Architects were commissioned to create a new home for Sacks Morasha, a Jewish primary school in Finchley, by repurposing an existing historic building. The project began with a series of feasibility studies to identify potential sites capable of supporting a school environment that could accommodate a 1-form entry model. After evaluating several options, a former Barnet College building on Stanhope Road—a Victorian-era church hall near Tally Ho—was selected. This building, with its historic charm and sturdy construction, offered a unique opportunity to blend tradition with modern education needs. The design challenge was to reconfigure and adapt this Victorian structure to meet the demands of a modern primary school while preserving and enhancing its historic features. Square Feet Architects approached this challenge with creative planning, including the addition of a mezzanine-level school hall. This layout allowed for the school hall to be efficiently integrated into the limited space without requiring a large extension, preserving the building’s overall scale and character.
