Long Four Acres – Norfolk By: NP Architects NP Architects  – completed the detailed planning and construction drawings for this self-build plot on the edge of Bracon Ash, a picturesque village near Norwich. The client wanted a contemporary build with Georgian proportioned windows, symmetry and flow.  They had lived in a few period properties previously and wanted a house with internal flow, particularly in living areas. The house features a grand central staircase and hallway, linking all three floors with a large circular lantern at the top. Design key requirements- the clients had already purchased a sculpture ‘Couching Man’ from Laurence Edwards and wanted this to be a key feature. This led to a design of a shallow pool in which the sculpture sits, backed by a knapped flint wall which is illuminated at night with views from the house. The building has a asymmetrical façade whilst the rear opens up with larger panes of glass and sliding openings that connect the interiors to the garden and open countryside beyond. A rear balcony creates a veranda and, along with a metal pergola, provides solar shading to southern glazing in summer months while maximising solar gain in winter.
