This terraced property is a Grade 2 listed, Georgian townhouse, situated in the heart of the City of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hetreed Ross Architects used their extensive experience in heritage work to obtain planning and listed building consent for a sympathetic restoration, upgrade and new garage building.
This property is part of a Grade II terrace of stunning townhouses designed by renowned Georgian architect John Pinch the Elder. Through careful design, with subtle interventions, the demands of a modern home were not compromised whilst enhancing some of the original historic features.
Hetreed Ross Architects have a proven track record in restoring Listed Buildings, with a deep understanding of conservation principles. The sensitive restoration of the property showcases an expertise in balancing modern needs with historic preservation.
Significant internal renovations and alterations included rearrangements of bathrooms, bedrooms and ensuites to make the spaces more useable whilst revealing some historic features. A key design element was the carefully crafted and elegant, lightweight glass winter garden that infills the lower rear courtyard. This allows better circulation to the back of the house including access to the vaults.
Upgrading windows to high performance sash windows using vacuum glazing enabled the reinstatement of the small panes, an original historic feature, greatly improving the external appearance whilst reducing energy bills.
The rear garden has been beautifully arranged into a series of terraces. There is a new double garage building to the rear, with a substantial retaining undercroft which provides some essential garden storage.
