Period Shell, Contemporary Soul

Located within a handsome period mansion block in Marylebone, this Grade II listed apartment demonstrates how carefully considered interiors can transform an already generous architectural shell within the built environment. Designed by Zulufish, the one-bedroom residence pairs rich materials, bespoke detailing and a restrained colour palette to create a sophisticated London home that feels equally suited to quiet evenings and elegant entertaining.
Design Approach:
The owners wanted a home that reflected their lifestyle without feeling overly formal. Working in the media and frequently entertaining, they envisioned a London apartment that felt luxurious yet comfortable, drawing inspiration from the atmosphere of boutique hotels rather than traditional period interiors.
The apartment’s generous proportions, high ceilings and large sash windows provided an ideal foundation. Rather than introducing bold architectural changes, Zulufish focused on enhancing the existing spaces through materiality, bespoke craftsmanship and carefully balanced lighting, an approach that reflects a wider sensitivity within the built environment towards working with what already exists.
A rich palette of dark timber, marble, polished plaster and brass creates depth throughout, while the abundance of natural light prevents the darker finishes from feeling heavy.
Material Palette:
The kitchen adopts a refined contemporary aesthetic, where high-gloss timber cabinetry is paired with black marble worktops and back-painted glass splashbacks. Together, the finishes create a sleek composition that complements the apartment’s period character while introducing a more modern expression.
Adjacent, the dining area centres around a timber dining table by Sé Collections beneath a sculptural statement chandelier, creating an intimate setting for entertaining.
Within the principal living room, a bespoke coffered ceiling conceals an integrated lighting system that allows the atmosphere to shift throughout the day. Polished plaster walls add softness and texture, while bespoke lacquered joinery by HUX London introduces both display space and concealed storage.
Mirrored alcoves positioned either side of the contemporary fireplace subtly amplify natural light and reinforce the room’s sense of depth, while carefully selected furniture and lighting complete the layered interior.
Private Spaces:
The material palette softens within the bedroom, where polished plaster walls are balanced by pale herringbone wool carpeting and a bespoke mirrored headboard with integrated lighting. The restrained composition creates a calm, hotel-inspired atmosphere while maintaining the apartment’s refined character.
The bathroom continues the emphasis on craftsmanship and luxurious materials. Piatra Grey marble wraps the space, complemented by a bespoke wenge timber vanity with marble surfaces and heritage brass fittings. Above, concealed LED lighting integrated within a suspended ceiling introduces a subtle architectural glow, while mirrored surfaces enhance both light and perceived space.
Rather than relying on decorative excess, the project demonstrates how carefully selected materials, bespoke joinery and considered lighting can elevate a historic apartment within the built environment. The result is a timeless London residence where heritage architecture provides the backdrop for a contemporary interior defined by warmth, craftsmanship and understated luxury.
