Experience Shapes the Detail: My Journey in Specialist Glazing
I have spent around 25 years working in the glazing industry, and during that time I have learned that successful glazing is rarely about the product alone. It is about understanding buildings, understanding design intent and knowing how a design will translate from a drawing into something that can actually be built.
My career started on site as an installer, where I spent roughly ten years fitting windows and doors every day. That period gave me a level of practical understanding that you simply cannot gain from drawings or technical manuals. When you are physically installing systems on a daily basis you develop a strong appreciation for tolerances, structure and how buildings behave in the real world.
After my time installing I moved into fabrication management before transitioning into technical sales, surveying and specification work. Over the following decade I worked across many aspects of the industry, from technical problem solving and system specification through to client consultation and project delivery. This broad experience allowed me to understand the full lifecycle of a glazing project, from manufacturing through to installation on site.
In March 2022 I acquired Exact and began developing the business into a specialist glazing company focused on high end residential projects. Today we work primarily across Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey and London, delivering glazing packages that often feature minimal frame systems, large sliding doors and highly detailed architectural elements where glass becomes a defining part of the design.
Since taking over the business we have expanded into two locations, with showrooms and offices in Liphook, Hampshire and Dorchester, Dorset. Establishing a presence in both areas has allowed us to support projects across the South of England while maintaining close relationships with architects, developers and contractors throughout the region.
My approach to glazing has always been shaped by my early years working on site. Because I spent so long installing systems myself, I naturally look at drawings from the perspective of someone who will eventually have to build them. Working closely with architects and contractors early in the design process allows us to maintain the architectural vision while ensuring the solution is practical and technically achievable.
Minimal frame glazing has become increasingly prominent in contemporary residential architecture. Large expanses of glass create impressive living spaces and allow homes to connect with their surroundings in a very natural way. At the same time, performance expectations have increased significantly.
Low U values and high-performance glazing are now essential rather than optional. Clients expect beautiful architecture, but they also expect buildings that are comfortable, efficient and well-engineered.
As the business continues to grow, one of the biggest challenges is finding the right people who share the same attention to detail and technical understanding. Specialist glazing requires a high level of knowledge, and building a team capable of delivering that consistently is something I place a lot of focus on.
Looking ahead, glazing will continue to play a central role in residential architecture. Glass has become one of the defining materials in modern homes, but achieving the balance between transparency, performance and durability requires careful specification and experience.
For me, the objective has always been straightforward. Deliver glazing that supports the architecture, performs properly and is built in a way that makes sense in the real world. When that balance is right, glazing becomes far more than a functional element. It becomes a defining feature of the building itself.
