Set within a mature residential setting in North Hampshire, this contemporary extension represents a confident architectural intervention that balances material experimentation with calm, disciplined detailing. Designed as a clear contrast to the existing dwelling while remaining respectful of its scale and context, the project explores how texture, colour and precision construction can transform a domestic addition into a sculptural presence within the garden.
The extension is conceived as a low, horizontal pavilion, defined by strong lines and deep overhangs that frame expansive areas of glazing. These overhangs are finished in a refined palette of gold and olive zinc, introducing warmth and subtle variation that shifts with changing light conditions throughout the day. The zinc wraps cleanly around the building envelope, reinforcing the sense of solidity and permanence while allowing the extension to sit confidently alongside the original house.
A defining feature of the project is the external façade, clad in recycled plastic tiles arranged in a repeating geometric pattern. Four tonal variations are used across the surface, creating depth, rhythm and a constantly changing visual effect as sunlight moves across the elevations. The tiles introduce a strong sustainability narrative, demonstrating how recycled materials can be deployed in a refined and contemporary way without compromising on performance or aesthetics. The façade reads almost as a crafted surface rather than a conventional wall, blurring the line between architecture and art.
Large-format Cortizo sliding doors form the primary interface between inside and out. Detailed with level thresholds, the doors allow the polished concrete flooring to flow seamlessly from the interior living spaces onto the external terrace. This continuity enhances the sense of openness and reinforces the extension’s role as a mediating space between house and garden. When fully opened, the glazed elevations dissolve the boundary entirely, allowing the extension to function as an extension of the landscape as much as the home.
Internally, the material palette is intentionally restrained. Polished concrete floors provide a robust yet elegant base, reflecting light deep into the plan and complementing the external zinc finishes. Joinery and furnishings are allowed to take centre stage, framed by crisp architectural lines and generous glazing. A large pivot door acts as a sculptural element in its own right, marking the transition into the extension and reinforcing the sense of arrival and occasion.
From a construction perspective, the project demanded a high level of coordination and craftsmanship. The geometric façade required meticulous setting-out and installation to maintain consistency across the elevation, while the zinc overhangs demanded careful detailing to achieve their sharp edges and flawless junctions. The level thresholds to the sliding doors required precise tolerances to ensure performance without compromising accessibility or visual continuity.
