Reflections: A calm retreat that belongs to the landscape A Project By: ARCO2 Reflections sits on the edge of Portwrinkle, looking out across the Cornish coast. The project began with a forgotten garden – overgrown, uneven and open to the sea. It held potential, waiting for imagination to bring it back to life. Our clients envisioned a coastal retreat: a calm, contemporary home that felt connected to the sea yet almost invisible from the road above. They wanted modern comfort, open views and a building that respected its setting rather than dominating it. The vision was clear; every room should face the ocean and the house should feel part of the earth itself. The site, at the entrance to Portwrinkle, lay within an Open Area of Local Significance, highly visible and sensitive to development. Careful planning and early engagement were essential. We met several times with the parish council and local residents, gaining their support through open conversation and considered design. To demonstrate our commitment to the community, we first built a new pavement and dry stone wall, improving access to the beach path before construction began.
