This project began with a clear brief: more light, better flow, and a kitchen worth spending time in. The clients wanted the ground floor of their Victorian terrace to feel less segmented and more supportive of modern family living. Rather than simply adding space for the sake of it, the aim was to create a home that felt calmer, more open, and more complete in the way it worked day to day.
Elemented approached the project by opening up the internal plan and extending the rear of the house, allowing the kitchen, dining, and living areas to work as one connected sequence. Internal walls were removed to improve sightlines and movement through the ground floor, while the new extension strengthened the relationship between the house and the garden. This was a spatial project as much as a visual one. The success of the scheme lies in how naturally each part of the home now connects to the next.
A structural glass roof became one of the defining architectural moves. Positioned above the extension, it draws soft daylight deep into the centre of the plan and changes the whole atmosphere of the house. Rather than relying on brightness alone, the roof helps create a more even, natural quality of light across the kitchen and dining spaces, making the ground floor feel open and calm throughout the day. Together with wide sliding doors to the patio and garden, it gives the rear of the house a stronger sense of openness and release.
The new kitchen acts as the anchor of the project. Designed with custom cabinetry, integrated appliances, and a waterfall island, it balances presence with restraint. The palette was deliberately kept simple: matte cabinetry, soft greys, marble-effect surfaces, and herringbone oak flooring that runs through the living spaces to unify the plan. These choices helped keep the home feeling elegant but also durable and easy to live in, which was central to the brief.
The project is notable not because it relies on dramatic gestures, but because it uses a small number of carefully judged moves to transform everyday life. The visual connection from the front lounge to the rear garden gives the terrace a stronger sense of depth. The layout now supports both family life and entertaining more naturally. The finishes feel contemporary, but still warm and welcoming. It is a home that has been modernised without becoming cold, and opened up without losing the sense of comfort a family home needs.
