Darlington Railway Station
A Project By: Collaborative Architecture
The extension and alteration works at Darlington Railway Station represent a significant investment in the future of rail infrastructure in the North East, while carefully respecting the historic character of one of the region’s most important listed transport buildings. Designed by architect Kevin Brown in collaboration with engineers from ARUP during 2018–2019, the scheme has now been successfully delivered, with only minor refinements made during the construction and design development process. Kevin has a broad range of working on infrastructure from the extension to the Tyne and Wear Metro, various rail projects in the UK and work on metro stations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The project was conceived to address increasing passenger demand and improve regional connectivity across Tees Valley and the wider North East. A key component of the scheme is the introduction of new platforms on the eastern side of the station, creating enhanced rail connections to Middlesbrough and Saltburn. These additions improve operational flexibility and support the continued growth of local and regional rail services.
Alongside the rail infrastructure improvements, the development delivers a substantial multi-storey car park, significantly increasing parking capacity and improving accessibility for passengers arriving by car. A new station concourse provides a modern, spacious arrival and departure experience, creating a clear and efficient circulation route between the station’s various transport facilities.
One of the most sensitive aspects of the design involved linking the new station facilities with the existing Grade II* listed station building. Rather than imposing directly upon the historic fabric, the new pedestrian bridge was carefully designed to minimise its impact. The bridge connects into the existing station through a discreet intervention at roof level, reducing alterations to the original masonry structure and preserving the architectural integrity of the historic station. This approach allowed the new infrastructure to coexist with the heritage asset while meeting contemporary operational requirements.
The elevated bridge and upper concourse also create a completely new experience for passengers, providing panoramic views across the station platforms and railway operations below. These previously unavailable viewpoints enhance the sense of arrival and offer a greater appreciation of the scale and significance of the historic railway environment.
The scheme extends beyond transportation infrastructure by introducing new retail units within the station environment. These commercial spaces bring activity and vitality to the development, creating opportunities for passengers and visitors while strengthening connections between the station and surrounding public areas. Together, the new platforms, concourse, bridge, retail facilities and parking provision transform Darlington Railway Station into a modern transport hub, balancing heritage conservation with the demands of a growing regional rail network.
