Northumberland Leisure Project Receives Full Planning Permission By: Collaborative Architecture A new Tourist-focused Leisure Attraction on the outskirts of Morpeth, Northumberland has just been granted Planning Permission on 5 August 2025. This project will serve as a Gateway to Northumberland for locals and visitors alike on the side of the A1 – with direct access from the A1 southbound and from the Stannington Junction, northbound. An unused and derelict old-eyesore of a petrol station just north of Stannington is sandwiched between the A1 north-south route and the old Great North Road which once replaced it and is just at the end of Stannington Village. This old ‘grey-belt’ site has considerable industrial history having once been the location of a 19th Century coal mine, amongst other uses, and indeed an old mine shaft is still on the site which will be made safe as part of this development, together with other site enhancement. The site is due to be transformed into Northumberland’s newest and perhaps most important tourism hotspot.
