MELLALUE: A Sustainable Coastal Home in Harmony with Nature By: ARCO2 Architecture MELLALUE is a contemporary, low-energy home that replaces a dated mid-20th century dormer bungalow in Polzeath. Designed to embrace the stunning coastal landscape, the project was driven by a strong sustainability ethos and a desire to improve both the homeowners’ experience and their neighbours’ outlook. The client’s brief called for a modern, energy-efficient home that could accommodate a multigenerational family. A central design challenge was to protect sea views for neighbours while minimising the building’s visual impact. The solution: a curved, green roof that mirrors the natural landscape and keeps the ridge height in line with the original bungalow. Internally, a distinctive “spline wall” runs the length of the house, dividing public and private spaces while drawing visitors toward panoramic sea views revealed upon entry. The home is arranged across three levels: Lower Ground: Subterranean bedrooms and a teen lounge with sea views. Ground Floor: Open-plan living, guest bedroom for elderly parents, utility, and services. First Floor: Master suite and additional en-suite bedroom, both with terraces.
