The Tees Transporter Bridge By: Collaborative Architecture Spanning the River Tees between Middlesbrough and Port Clarence, the Tees Transporter Bridge stands as one of the most recognisable symbols of the North East’s industrial heritage. Opened in 1911, the bridge is a feat of early 20th-century engineering and one of only a handful of working transporter bridges left in the world. Its distinctive steel structure, with a suspended gondola ferrying vehicles and pedestrians across the river, was once a marvel of innovation—designed to allow shipping to pass freely beneath while maintaining a vital connection across the Tees. In recent years, efforts have been made to breathe new life into this iconic structure. A visionary scheme led by Kevin Brown and Luca Biselli, working in collaboration with Arup, sought to restore the bridge’s functionality while making it more accessible and engaging for modern visitors.
