Fern House: Designing with Dignity in Mind A Project By: Alessandro Caruso Architects Location: Bingley, West Yorkshire ACA was commissioned by Abbeyfield to deliver the interior design for Fern House, a purpose-built Extra Care development in Bingley, West Yorkshire. Located on the former Bingley Hospital site, the development provides 50 Extra Care apartments, 30 dementia care rooms, a day centre and a range of communal spaces designed to support independent living, wellbeing and community engagement. ACA’s design creates a welcoming, homely environment that reflects the needs of residents while fostering a strong sense of community and belonging. Design Brief ACA was appointed to create an interior design scheme that would provide a welcoming, high-quality environment where residents feel comfortable, supported and proud to welcome family, friends and the wider community. The design needed to respond sensitively to the needs of older people, including those living with dementia, while promoting comfort, familiarity and a strong sense of home. Design Approach Drawing on evidence-based design principles for later-life environments, ACA developed an interior concept centred on familiarity, orientation and wellbeing.
