Fern House: Designing with Dignity in Mind

ACA was commissioned by Abbeyfield to deliver the interior design for Fern House, a purpose-built Extra Care development in Bingley, West Yorkshire. Located on the former Bingley Hospital site, the development provides 50 Extra Care apartments, 30 dementia care rooms, a day centre and a range of communal spaces designed to support independent living, wellbeing and community engagement. ACA’s design creates a welcoming, homely environment that reflects the needs of residents while fostering a strong sense of community and belonging.
Design Brief
ACA was appointed to create an interior design scheme that would provide a welcoming, high-quality environment where residents feel comfortable, supported and proud to welcome family, friends and the wider community. The design needed to respond sensitively to the needs of older people, including those living with dementia, while promoting comfort, familiarity and a strong sense of home.
Design Approach
Drawing on evidence-based design principles for later-life environments, ACA developed an interior concept centred on familiarity, orientation and wellbeing. Each floor takes inspiration from the local character of Bingley, incorporating themed interiors and recognisable imagery to support intuitive wayfinding and help residents navigate the building with confidence. A collaborative design process also saw ACA partner with a local artist to create a bespoke installation for the Copper Kettle Café. Crafted from reclaimed and vintage copper kettles, the tactile artwork celebrates the area’s heritage while providing a meaningful landmark that supports orientation for residents living with dementia.
Materials and Interior
The interior palette was carefully curated to create a warm, domestic atmosphere throughout the development. Soft, welcoming finishes and thoughtfully selected materials reinforce the homely character of the spaces, while acoustic materials help reduce noise and contribute to a calm, therapeutic environment. Every design decision was made with resident comfort, accessibility and wellbeing at its core.
Outcomes
The completed scheme delivers a contemporary yet familiar environment that enhances residents’ quality of life and fosters meaningful connections with the local community. Through a combination of evidence-led design, locally inspired storytelling and bespoke artistic interventions, Fern House offers a welcoming setting that supports independence, promotes wellbeing and reflects the identity of its surroundings.

Alessandro Caruso Architects have created interiors that balance comfort, clarity and local character — from themed wayfinding inspired by Bingley to tactile artistic interventions that aid orientation and celebrate community heritage.
