Frank Shaw Associates, in collaboration with Henry Boot Construction and The University of Derby, completed the transformational refurbishment of the Grade II listed St Helena building in Chesterfield. This iconic structure has been revitalised to serve as a state-of-the-art facility, now home to the University of Derby’s adult nursing, social care, engineering, and computing courses.

The University of Derby’s acquisition of the St Helena building marks a significant investment in the future of education and the local community. The refurbished facility is designed to provide cutting-edge learning environments, including mock wards equipped with robotic or ‘sim’ patients that simulate human responses to medical treatments. These advanced resources will play a crucial role in training the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Additionally, the building features offices designated as business incubator units, offering vital support to Chesterfield’s future entrepreneurs.

Key Aspects of the Refurbishment
The refurbishment of the St Helena building focused on two primary objectives: a comprehensive general refurbishment and the enhancement of specific key areas.
General Refurbishment:
This aspect of the project involved updating and concealing all building services to maintain the aesthetic integrity of the historic structure. The team carefully executed craft-led repairs to the building’s fabric and finishes, ensuring that the character of the Grade II listed building was preserved while making necessary adjustments to improve accessibility throughout the facility. Enhancement of Key Areas:
The refurbishment also included contemporary enhancements to key areas within the building.
