Transforming an Islington Warehouse into a Luxury Triplex Apartment

By: Square Feet Architects

Nestled in the heart of Islington, an unassuming warehouse has been reimagined and transformed into an exquisite luxury triplex apartment. This hidden gem spans three spacious floors, each meticulously designed to balance elegance with comfort. At the center of the apartment lies a sweeping staircase, serving as both a striking architectural feature and a functional link between the different levels. This renovation project aimed to create an inviting and sophisticated living space, seamlessly blending modern amenities with the building’s original industrial charm.

The first phase of the project focused on optimising the apartment’s layout to make the most of its unique spatial qualities. A key aspect of this phase was the integration of an external first-floor space into the internal design. Originally an outdoor area, this space has been transformed into an airy yet cosy reading nook. The design leverages natural light to create a serene environment, perfect for quiet moments of relaxation. Surrounded by large windows and featuring comfortable seating, the reading nook has become an intimate sanctuary within the larger open-plan space. Its addition brings a sense of warmth and character, enhancing the apartment’s blend of luxury and livability.

In response to the client’s need for a dedicated work area, a personal study was added, providing an ideal space for focused productivity without compromising the apartment’s aesthetic. This study, thoughtfully positioned to take advantage of natural light and views, is designed with minimalism and functionality in mind. Custom cabinetry and shelving maximise storage while maintaining a clean, uncluttered feel, allowing the study to serve as both an efficient workspace and a quiet retreat. The study also contributes to the apartment’s adaptability, ensuring that it meets the client’s professional needs without encroaching on the more relaxed areas of the home.

To enhance the luxury of the apartment, several other features were incorporated into the renovation. Landscaped terraces were added, providing residents with an outdoor space that extends the living area while offering an oasis of greenery amid the urban landscape. The terraces serve as perfect spots for entertaining guests or simply enjoying the tranquility of a private outdoor retreat. Lush plantings and carefully selected outdoor furnishings contribute to a seamless indoor-outdoor flow, further enhancing the apartment’s sense of spaciousness and connection to nature.

The apartment’s functionality was also improved with the addition of a well-equipped utility room. Outfitted with modern appliances and ample storage, the utility room is designed to support everyday living without interrupting the aesthetic flow of the apartment. Updated bathrooms, featuring high-quality fixtures and finishes, add a touch of spa-like luxury. Each bathroom is crafted to offer both style and comfort, with materials chosen to reflect the apartment’s overall sophistication. These updates, combined with thoughtful design choices, have created an environment that feels both luxurious and welcoming.

Upon completion, the apartment was move-in ready, providing the client with a living space that is both stylish and comfortable. The redesigned warehouse now stands as a testament to the possibilities of adaptive reuse, showcasing how industrial spaces can be transformed into luxurious, contemporary homes. The integration of functional features like the study and utility room, coupled with inviting spaces such as the reading nook and terraces, exemplifies a modern approach to living that is both practical and indulgent.

In sum, this Islington warehouse conversion has produced a triplex apartment that perfectly balances luxury with practicality. From the sweeping staircase to the cosy reading nook, every detail has been thoughtfully executed to create a home that is as comfortable as it is beautiful.
