The Hampton Gardens Secondary School

By: Frank Shaw Associates

The Hampton Gardens Secondary School is a 1,500-place new-build School designed and delivered by Frank Shaw within Peterborough’s new Hampton Gardens development. A joint project between Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council, Hampton Gardens opened in September 2017 and has been run by Hampton Academies Trust – who also run the nearby Hampton College.

In response to the unique context and sponsor’s pedagogy, our design was conceived as two curriculum wings – one housing a STEM centre and the other accommodating humanities, which embraces a sheltered, south facing, recreation space. The main entrance is crowned by the Learning Resource Centre and is approached via a wide pedestrian boulevard punctuated by meeting and seating areas overlooking the 3G all-weather sports pitch. The site includes an external dining terrace, a tiered amphitheatre providing shelter and performance space, and a multi-use games areas. The school also has provision for 300 sixth form students. During the construction process, we worked as the delivery architect, becoming the City Council’s preferred team alongside the main contractor following a rigorous competitive process.

As the first project to be completed under Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council’s Framework, we were able to strengthen our ties with the key Clients and Stakeholders of the Framework through the delivery of the subsequent 5 schools which followed the Hampton Gardens Secondary School.

“The plans for Hampton Gardens give a wonderful vision of a first class building that will provide the very best education facilities for secondary aged students across the Hampton development and Yaxley areas.”

Councillor John Holdich, Leader of the City Council and Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and University.
