Timber to Glass: A Bold Upgrade
A Project By: Glass Tech
Location: Manchester
What was once a traditional timber staircase has been completely reimagined through the installation of a bespoke frameless glass balustrade with black architectural detailing. The project demonstrates how modern glazing can transform an interior by maximising natural light, improving sightlines and creating a clean, contemporary centrepiece without altering the home’s original layout.
Every staircase has the potential to become far more than simply a route between floors. In this North Yorkshire home, the existing staircase featured painted timber balustrades that visually enclosed the space and prevented natural light from flowing freely through the entrance hall.
The homeowner wanted a modern, open feel without undertaking major structural alterations. The solution was to replace the traditional timber guarding with a bespoke frameless glass balustrade designed to complement the property’s contemporary interior while meeting all current safety standards.
The transformation began with the careful removal of the original timber balustrades. Precision measurements were then taken to manufacture each individual glass panel specifically for the staircase geometry. Rather than relying on standard components, every panel was produced as a bespoke piece, ensuring perfect alignment throughout both the staircase and upper landing.
To complement the home’s existing colour palette, black powder-coated steel stringer plates, fixings and handrail were selected. These darker architectural details provide a striking contrast against the light oak doors, soft neutral walls and pale carpeting, creating a refined, modern appearance without overwhelming the space.
One of the most noticeable improvements is the amount of natural light now travelling throughout the hallway and landing. By replacing solid timber elements with structural glass, uninterrupted sightlines have been created from the entrance hall to the first floor. The result is an interior that immediately feels larger, brighter and significantly more open.
Although the visual impact is substantial, achieving this finish required careful planning and precise installation. Each glass panel had to be positioned accurately to maintain consistent sightlines, clean joint lines and uniform spacing while integrating seamlessly with the steel support system. Attention to detail throughout installation was essential to deliver the minimal appearance the client was looking for.
The project also demonstrates how contemporary glazing can work alongside traditional building materials. Rather than competing with the natural oak doors and neutral finishes, the frameless glass enhances them by allowing each element of the interior to remain visible. The staircase becomes an architectural feature while still feeling understated and elegant.
Safety remained paramount throughout the design. The toughened laminated glass system provides exceptional structural performance and complies with current building regulations, ensuring the installation delivers both aesthetic appeal and long-term durability for everyday family use.
The completed staircase has become the focal point of the property. What was previously a functional part of the home now provides a strong architectural statement, combining clean lines, premium materials and expert craftsmanship into a feature that will remain timeless for years to come.
This project perfectly illustrates how bespoke glazing can transform an existing interior without the need for extensive renovation. By carefully balancing engineering, design and precision installation, the result is a staircase that feels lighter, more spacious and unmistakably contemporary.

The transformation of this Manchester staircase shows how precision glazing and thoughtful detailing can completely redefine a traditional interior. By replacing solid timber with bespoke frameless glass, Glass Tech has created a brighter, more open space where natural light flows freely and clean architectural lines become the focal point. The combination of tailored glass panels, black detailing and meticulous installation delivers a modern feature that elevates the entire entrance hall without altering the home’s original structure.
It’s a clear example of how contemporary glazing can enhance character, improve sightlines and introduce a refined sense of openness through craftsmanship and careful engineering. Projects like this reflect the quality and innovation shared across the built environment network, where design, detail and technical expertise come together to transform everyday spaces.
