Langarth Garden Village – Cornwall

Bringing together one unified masterplan, on a site with challenging history and topography, Langarth Garden Village prioritises people and community over everything.
Langarth Garden Village will be a vibrant community for between 8,000 and 10,000 residents of Cornwall. It will have local character, strong services, and integrated and accessible transport and green spaces.
In 2019 AHR Architects were assigned to design the masterplan. WyrdTree then teamed up with AHR Bristol, providing visual communication at various stages of the development.
Collaboration and exemplary stakeholder engagement from the outset has ensured the masterplan addresses the needs and requirements of everyone.
Nurturing wellbeing, prioritising sustainability, the development integrates and retains as much natural green spaces as possible, encouraging residents to spend more time outdoors.
The biggest project Cornwall Council has ever achieved permission for, Langarth forms part of a wider strategy for the area to support local infrastructure and improve residents’ quality of life.
The initial stage was partly inspired by C F Moller’s award-winning entry for RIBA’s contest ‘Re-Imagining the Garden City’, a project we also assisted with 3d visualisation which was shortlisted as part of 4 finalists and won an international World Landscape Award a year later.
For the initial stage our team provided two visuals for a residential hamlet that was part of the masterplan – one aerial hero CGI and an eye level view focusing on the lake nearby.
In 2020 the design progressed to a more advanced stage and our team was asked to provide five more visuals detailing various key areas of the masterplan – Penventinnie Village (residential), Penventinnie Square, Langarth Square (mixed-use, higher density), a view detailing typical communal gardens in a rural hamlet and Willow Walk (a public park nearby).
The visuals were designed in close collaboration with AHR Bristol and were soon posted on AHR and Langarth Garden Village‘s websites.
In June 2021 the masterplan won the ‘Masterplanning for the Future’ Michelmore Property Awards and was shortlisted in the Constructing Excellence South West Awards 2021 for the ‘Integration & Collaborative Working Award’.
In the summer of 2021 the developers submitted a successful application for full planning permission for the Langarth Garden Village development to Cornwall Council. The Council’s Cabinet later endorsed the key principles and proposals set out in the masterplan, approving £11.9m of funding for the construction of the first Langarth Garden Village primary school and £6.93m for the new renewable energy centre.
