KWL Architects are an acclaimed and award-winning architectural practice who specialise in designing innovative solutions tailored specifically for the care sector.
Their latest project is a 75-bedroom care home, located North of Yate town centre, which is designed to provide specialist residential, dementia and respite care within a modern, dynamic care environment.
As the site sits with a wider – predominantly residential – masterplan, the exterior of the care home has been designed to feel domestic in scale with its mass broken down with the use of gables and varying materiality creating the impression of a group of domestic-scale residential buildings to fit within the existing street scene. The application of reconstituted stone and red brick reflects and embraces the local vernacular ensuring the care home integrates within its surroundings.
Upon entering the home there is an inviting entrance foyer that opens onto a reception, café bar, hair and beauty salon, and cinema. Circulation through this ‘communal hub’ arrangement encourages interaction between residents and visitors. Communal lounges, dining rooms, and activity rooms are located on each floor which ensures easy and immediate access for all residents to socialise and unwind. All internal spaces are modern and generous with clear wayfinding for those with dementia.
Connection to external spaces is a priority both in terms of accessibility and views, this has resulted in a design that benefits every resident within the care home. All bedrooms on the ground floor benefit from a patio and access to the private garden space whilst the bedrooms on the first floor have views over these landscaped gardens. Terraces are also included off communal areas at first floor to provide further external space for those less mobile.
The proposal includes several new trees along with high quality planting, wildlife habitat enhancements and hard landscaping which results in a series of high-quality, secure garden spaces for the residents. These areas include sensory gardens, water features and varied seating areas.
KWL Architects have delivered a carefully considered, high-quality care home, ensuring that every aspect of the design enhances the residents’ quality of life.
