Greenbank Hotel: Coastal Elegance Redefined
Perched on the Falmouth waterfront, the Greenbank Hotel has long been a cherished fixture on Cornwall’s coastline. Now, thanks to a visionary renovation by Laurence Associates, this historic establishment has been transformed into a contemporary hospitality destination while preserving its quintessential charm. With sweeping views across the harbour, the redesigned hotel sets a new standard for coastal luxury, blending thoughtful architecture with modern functionality.
The centrepiece of the renovation is a striking cantilevered restaurant and events space, featuring a fully glazed façade. This sweeping design captures uninterrupted vistas of Pendennis Headland, the harbour, and the village of Flushing beyond. The floor-to-ceiling glass creates an immersive dining experience, offering guests a seamless connection to the spectacular coastal scenery.
Beyond the restaurant, Laurence Associates reimagined the hotel’s interior to optimise both functionality and guest experience. The project included:
- Conversion of underutilised areas into additional hotel bedrooms, expanding the hotel’s capacity.
- The removal of the under-croft parking area to make space for new guest rooms and administrative offices.
- A contemporary front extension, providing an internal fire escape and a relocated, state-of-the-art kitchen.
Every modification was carefully considered to enhance the hotel’s efficiency without compromising its aesthetic character.
One of the defining achievements of the project is the redesigned waterfront elevation. Laurence Associates introduced a cohesive architectural style that ties the entire hotel together. The new façade complements the existing structure, creating a harmonious blend of historic and contemporary design. The result is a building that feels both refreshed and timeless.
Improved accessibility was a key objective of the renovation. The project introduced:
- Level access to reception, making the hotel more welcoming for all visitors.
- Accessible parking bays, ensuring convenience for guests with limited mobility.
- Additional parking spaces along North Parade, improving overall accessibility for visitors.
These enhancements prioritise guest comfort while future-proofing the hotel for evolving accessibility standards.
With the restaurant’s capacity expanded to 150 covers, Greenbank Hotel is now better equipped to host larger events, from weddings to corporate functions. The thoughtful design not only enhances the guest experience but also strengthens the hotel’s long-term sustainability. By expanding its offerings, the Greenbank Hotel is poised to attract more visitors, boosting the local economy and securing its place as a premier destination in Falmouth.
Laurence Associates worked closely with Cornwall Council, local specialists, and the Falmouth community throughout the project. Their collaborative approach ensured that the design met both planning requirements and the needs of the local area, while respecting the hotel’s heritage.
