Tarn Moor
Tarn Moor is more than a house; it is a manifesto for sustainable living. Conceived by a climate scientist as a future-proof family home, the project is a carefully considered response to the environmental challenges of our time. Every decision – from structural systems to finishes and from renewable energy technologies to the reuse of demolition spoil – was driven by a commitment to minimising embodied carbon, reducing operational energy, and creating a healthy environment that will adapt to the family’s changing needs.
Designing with Environment in Mind
The project began with a simple but uncompromising brief. While the client was eager to embark on the building of their new home, they agreed to it only on the condition that the design and construction process would be as environmentally conscious as possible. The result is a dwelling where sustainability is not an add-on but the central design driver.
With a total area of 2,380 square feet, the three-bedroom home is designed in an “upside down” configuration. The family’s living, dining, and kitchen spaces are located on the upper floor to take advantage of far-reaching views and the natural principle that warm air rises, while the bedrooms occupy the cooler ground floor. This layout enhances comfort, maximises energy efficiency, and anchors family life in spaces filled with natural light and outlooks to the surrounding landscape.
Renewable Energy and Environmental Technologies
At the core of Tarn Moor’s low-carbon ethos are integrated renewable energy technologies and passive design strategies. The home is powered by 10 solar panels with a 3.8 kW capacity, providing a clean and low-maintenance renewable energy source that significantly reduces reliance on the national grid.
Heating and hot water are provided by a 12 kW air source heat pump, capable of extracting heat even in sub-zero conditions down to -15°C. Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) ensures a constant supply of fresh, filtered air while minimising heat loss, reducing the need for open windows and traditional ventilation systems. This combination of technologies creates a home that is not only environmentally responsible but also cost-efficient, with low running costs and a reduced carbon footprint.
Conscious Material Choices
Perhaps the most striking aspect of Tarn Moor is the rigour applied to material selection. Recognising the high embodied carbon of cement and steel, the design deliberately minimises their use, opting instead for timber and low-carbon alternatives wherever possible.
The structural frame is constructed from glulam beams and FSC/PEFC-certified timber, providing strength and durability while supporting sustainable forestry practices. Ground floor walls are built from locally sourced flint, with lime mortar used for both internal and external masonry. Internally, lime plaster and lime-based paints create breathable, non-toxic surfaces free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ensuring a healthier indoor environment.
Insulation is provided by wood fibre, chosen for its low carbon footprint, renewable origins, and excellent thermal performance. Foundations are formed using isolated concrete pads and strip footings composed of recycled aggregates, natural sands, and crushed demolition materials, rather than a single energy-intensive concrete plinth. Where concrete was required, Regen cement mixes with lower embodied carbon were used. These decisions collectively reduce the home’s environmental impact while rooting the building in traditional, natural materiality.

The robust material palette, renewable energy systems, and passive design strategies ensure the house will remain efficient and adaptable for decades to come. The layout offers flexibility as the family’s needs evolve, while the use of renewable technologies and lowcarbon materials future-proofs the home against rising energy costs and tightening environmental regulations.
