Short stays and long-term support

Frank Shaw recently delivered the new-build single-storey Lakers Short Breaks Centre for working age adults with learning disabilities and/or autism located in Woking, Surrey.
The Centre provides short breaks accommodation from their home environment, access to support people who can help them learn new skills, meet other people, access the community, and participate in social activities.
Nestled in an idyllic woodland setting South of the Goldsworth Park Recreation Ground and the Goldsworth Park Lake and 1.5 miles outside of Woking town centre, the Centre offers easy access and a calming setting for the Centre’s end-users. The fully accessible site comprises of 8 ensuite bedroom units for wheelchair users, a communal staff are, and an associated garden space as well as internal courtyards. The intended period of stay for end-users is between one night and two weeks.
Sustainability is a key part of the Centre, and therefore the building performance will meet LETI standards – achieving energy efficiency through minimising heat loss, maximising airtightness through the building envelope reducing heating costs for the Centre. It will also achieve lower carbon emissions through the reduced embodied carbon of the materials used, such as timber[1]clad internal walls, steel manufactured through an Electric Air Furnace, concrete with increased cement replacement, and a materiality strategy that prioritises procuring materials with a high recycled content.
